Summary of Activities and Projects 1998-2001

In 1998-2001 I participated in HIPAA standards development as a public sector representative to HL7 and as a participant in the HIPAA Metadata Registry Coalition. I was a beta tester of MetaPro, a distributable metadata registry based on the ANSI X3.825 Metamodel for the Management of Sharable Data and ISO/IEC 11179 Specification and Standardization of Data Elements.

ISO/IEC 11179 is now mature standard and is key to ongoing development of the Semantic Web. The period we are in is called the Semantic Wave. Precision in defining data elements (or in retrofitting definitions to existing data elements) is key to understanding the semantic infrastructure of organizations and ad hoc semantic infrastructures found on the Web.
